Laid Offs: When the Star has Fallen

It was supposed to be an early morning team meeting. “I’m going to have an one on one with (our boss)” he said. Roughly 20 minutes later, he came back with his head down. He packed his things and left without making eye contact.

“Do you have a minute?” my boss asked “Yes” I responded and followed him into a meeting room with Human Resource in present. We sat down and he said “the bank is going through restructuring and as a result, your role was terminated effective immediately”. He continued to explain. HR handed over a folder and in it retrenchment documentations and something about requiring me to sign something. “I will sign it now” I said. Something about I have a week to think it over. “It’s okay, I will sign it now”. I repeated and kept my composure. I just wanted to leave the room.

I got back to my deck avoiding all eye contacts. I started packing and shredding documentations. When I was done, I made the mistake by looking up and seeing their faces. I realized this is the end of my journey in this family and helplessly burst into tears. One by one they hugged me and it was getting harder and harder to breath. I dedicated everything to the team. I gave all that I could give and more and for the first time in over a decade I found myself unemployed without warning.

She walked me down and reassured me that this is a new beginning to something bigger and better. “We all go through this”.  He said “keep your chin up”, she said “you will see this is the best thing”, he said “Think about the person you were when you joined the bank and look at you now”, he said “It’s normal to feel this way now, but be sure that it’s for the better good”.

My family and friends stood by me while for years I prioritized work over them. For the first time, I realize I was wrong. Work is not everything. I will rise with a new and improved version of me.

Sometimes things are out of our control. But do not give up, stay strong, and keep going. Everything happens for a reason. You will see.

That night I recorded the first episode of “& the Other Stories” an documentary series of Electric Pea Productions. Everyone has a story, some need to be heard, and we can all learn from one another.
