Dreams & Happiness

My colleague once said “stop chasing your dream; start chasing after something that makes you happy..”. I just stood there puzzled and thinking about the journey to get here professionally (my dream and all that I know). I was happy, the learning, the growth, the people I encountered, and every step up the ladder. And one day a dream stop yielding happiness and happiness was lost in a dream.

Teddy Giang, a California native spent about a decade in web design and marketing helping small businesses with eCommerce. He said “I was basically chasing the money. Money was great but fulfillment and purpose was empty”. It was not the right kind of positive contribution to the world or future he wanted to fulfill. After 10 years, a once promising career was not only stripping him from happiness but also causing his health to deteriorate. “I was sick all the time due to my unhappiness, I looked deep down and decided to start over and follow my passion”.

Teddy, now in his mid 30s, just finished his prerequisites for Nursing. He took courage to give up a lucrative career in technology and enrolled in a nursing program in pursuing a new dream. And with that, a new positive outlook in life. He felt liberated, energetic, and as if he is in his mid 20s. Teddy’s four principles to keep in mind when it comes to choosing a career include Fulfillment, Happiness, Time, and Money.

We all evolve with time as with our dreams. At some point, some of us have to reevaluate our paths and follow our heart. Do not be afraid to try new things. Continue to make and pursue bigger dreams to fulfill a meaningful path and happiness. It is never too late.
