My first most memorable “what will you do when you grow up” discussion was in an 8th grade classroom with four friends. “Lawyer”, “Doctor”, “Businesswoman”, and “Professor” they answered. And my response was “Housewife”. My thirteen year old self saw the writings on the wall and did not even bother to dream.
I repeated this answer again years later in my International Finance course when a professor asked all the students what they want to do after college. He was a bit taken back by the answer and quickly moved on to the next student. The truth is I never thought I could achieve beyond a “Housewife”.
I was raised in a community where almost everyone ends up in food or retail businesses with rare exceptions especially for young girls. I was told the fact that I made it to college was a blessing. A degree would look good on paper for potential suitors.
Nevertheless, I have achieved beyond a “Housewife” and I’m writing to encourage others to dream and aspire for more in life. You can make it happen. Do not give up and keep going.
